Abstract
In this paper two methods of simulating crack growth in the presence of residual stress fields are presented and the results compared to experimental measurements. The first method utilizes linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM) and superimposes the solutions due to the applied load and the residual stress field. The second method presented is an elastoplastic fracture mechanics (EPFM) approach for crack growth simulation. The methods are shown to agree well with experimental measurements. 1 Introduction Cold working techniques are increasingly being used by manufacturers to enhance the fatigue performance of critical parts.
