Abstract
Mechanical surface treatments are utilized more and more to improve the fatigue strength of notched machine elements. In these cases the improvemement of the mechanical characteristics is mainly due to the residual stress state that the treatments induce in the surface layers of the material. This paper deals with deep rolling: a numerical procedure designed to calculate the residual stress state by varying the treatment parameters is proposed. This procedure was applied to a notched element and the numerical results were verified by means of the experimental measurements obtained by using an X-ray diffractometer. To demonstrate the influence of the treatment parameters a prediction of the fatigue strength of the specimen was made, both the residual stresses obtained with different rolling loads as well as the stresse
