Abstract
The application of a contact-friction algorithm for modeling the pile-soil interface in the analysis of pile foundations is presented. The algorithm is based on the penalty method and uses a "slideline" formulation. This model permits large relative sliding with friction. The adhesion between pile and soil, which is dependent on the effective stress in the soil surrounding the pile, is simulated using an equivalent total-stress approach. The contact algorithm is incorporated into a nonlinear dynamic axisymmetric finite- element model and is applied in the driving and axial capacity analyses of a prebored concrete pile in undrained clays. The cases of normally- consolidated and overconsolidated clays are co
