Precision spindle simulation R. Ami Department of Engineering Technology, Buckinghamshire College, Brunei University, Queen Alexandra Road, High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, HP 11 2JZ, UK ABSTRACT A five degree of freedom analysis of a precision grinding spindle supported by a pair of defect free angular-contact-ball bearings is presented. The model simulates an existing spindle. The ball to raceway contacts of the support bearings are simulated by a non-linear contact spring, representing the elastic deformation of the mating rolling members. The terms associated with the gyroscopic and eccentric rotation of the spindle are also included in the general equations of motion. Major frequencies associated with various degrees of freedom are highlighted. The significance of various design parameters on the accuracy of the spindle response are discussed. Particular emphasis is placed on the axial vibration of the spindle and the effective stiffness of the support as a consequence of different b
