Abstract
Laws for normal and tangential contact including friction are developed on the basis of a statistical surface model. Standard FE techniques natu- rally lead to a penalty type formulation. Calculations with physical surface parameters are in good agreement with analytical solutions. Presented ex- amples including the dynamic problem of a bouncer moving between two plates undergoing large rotations lead to reliable results as well. Interface physics Rough surfaces have contact only at their asperities. The true area of contact is much smaller than the apparent contact area resulting in very high local normal pressure. Therefore early investigations assumed a plastic contact of the asperities. Th
