Abstract

Approximate WF solution for part-through mode I cracks G.S. Wang The Aeronautical Research Institute of Sweden, PO Box 11021, S-161 11, Bromma, Sweden ABSTRACT A generalised approximate weight function solution (WF) is presented for two-dimensional (2D) mode I part-elliptical crack subjected to arbitrary crack surface pressure. The WFs are derived from one or several reference stress intensity factors (SIFs) and the corresponding crack surface pressures. This procedure enables SIF computations for general crack surface pressures as function of both the crack size and the location along the crack front. The procedure has been shown to be rather effective and efficient in solving complex problems compared to various available numerical methods. INTRODUCTION The WF concept, introduced by Bueckner* in 1970 for the plane crack problem and extended analogously to the three-dimensional (3D) crack problem by Rice^in 1972, enables the analysis of crack problem in a geometr
