Abstract
The cooling of a viscous liquid inside a container with walls at a constant temperature was modelled both by a CFD and a more conventional approach. The two models were validated through bench scale experiments with a 5-litre drum immersed in a cooling bath; the experimental evolution of the temperature map inside the drum fitted quite satisfactorily with the predictions of the models. The models were then applied at a large scale with a complex configuration, the rate of cooling of a heavy fuel oil inside the different tanks of a ship sunk in deep water.
