Abstract

Contact laws for rough surfaces are used to obtain, e.g., contact stiffness or contact conductivity. Usually contact laws are derived on the basis of asper- ity deformation models in conjunction with a stochastic roughness model. As the stochastic parameters depend strongly on the measurement proce- dure, the obtained contact laws have to be used carefully. Fractal surface parameters can be obtained, which are independent of sampling interval or length, but the resulting contact laws are still dependent on these values. 1 Statistical model Contact laws for rough surfaces are usually based on a statistical sur- face description combined with an asperity deformation model. While the surface model gives the probability P(z, k) of a summit with given height z and given curvature fc, the deformation model describes the contact behavior of a single summit.
