Abstract
A design shell for force calculations of solenoid actuators Y.B. Cheng, J.K. Sykulski Department of Electrical Engineering, University of Southampton, Southampton S09 5NH, UK ABSTRACT A customized shell in Sun Openwindow for a general purpose finite element package for electromagnetic analysis of solenoid actuators is presented. Appropriate database files are created, for a predefined actuator model, which may be used without any user intervention. Generation of batch files for analysis is greatly simplified. Finally, force calculations using the Maxwell Stress Tensor and the Virtual Work Principle are conducted automatically. The program is very user friendly and is menu-driven with several pull-down menus. INTRODUCTION When using a general purpose FE package, the finite element solution forms one of the stages in the design process, as illustrated in Figure 1. The role of FE modelling is thus to provide a field solution, as well as some integral parameters suc
