Abstract
The paper examines the axisymmetric problem of a rigid circular disc inclusion which is located at the circular opening of a stiffened plane embedded in an isotropic elastic infinite space. The inclusion is subjected to a central force which induces axisymmetric deformations within the elastic medium. The inclusion problem yields a three-part mixed boundary value problem. The set of integral equations associated with the mixed boundary value problem are reduced to two coupled integral equations which are solved in an approximate fashion to evaluate an expression for the elastic compliance of the rigid disc inclusion. 1 Introduction The class of problems which investigate the behaviour of inclusions embedded in continua has extensive applications in
