Abstract
Within the machine shop at Micro Metalsmiths Ltd. in North Yorkshire five Matchmaker FMS 3 machine tools are used to perform finishing operations on a wide range of non-ferrous castings. These five machine tools have a central role within the company's manufacturing strategy, and non-availability of any of the machines had a severe effect on production of selected batches. This was because, although these machines all shared a common axis configuration with similar drive and feedback devices, the Production Management team had little confidence in the ability to switch jobs between the machines, due to the differing errors on them.
