Abstract
Procedures to determine the parametric error behaviour of co-ordinate measuring machines (CMMs) from measurements of calibrated artefacts such as ball plates are well established in principle. However, since their practical implementation requires significant resources, both in terms of measurement time and computa- tion, it is important that these procedures provide reliable information. In recent modelling and simulation work at NPL, measurement experiments involving ball plates, ring gauges, step gauges and spheres have been analysed. The results show that the design of the experiment has a critical influence on the accuracy of the re-
