Abstract
It is well known that the dynamics of gears is very complicated and it is also well known that under light tooth loads it often leads to the highly undesirable phenomenon of gear rattle. However, to date research on gear rattle has only concentrated on externally-excited rattle in, usually, car gear boxes, while little has been done on investigation of self-induced gear rattle arising from geometrical errors of gear tooth profiles. It has been recognised by the authors that self-induced rattle can cause concern in machine tool gearboxes. With t
