Abstract
In the present paper the philosophy underlying the Des_ Cartes finite- element package for the direct computation of (electro)magnetic fields is discussed. This package is based on the use of a new type of element, the generalised Cartesian finite element, that automatically cares for the mod- elling of the conditions at interfaces between different media and along the outer boundaries. The formulation of the finite-element method used is chosen such that it simultaneously minimises the error in the curl and the error in the divergence. 1 Introduction Finite-element methods for computing electromagnetic fields often yield highly inaccurate results even when the field equat
