Abstract

Ecological assessment of phenanthrenecontaminated soils E. ~avini', A. ~ardella' & S. ~abbri' ' Environmental Technology Research Centre ZBiological Sciences Department EniTecnologie S.p.A., Monterotondo, ItaIy Abstract The scope of the work is to correlate the ecological impact of a phenanthrenepolluted soil to the matrix characteristics and the contamination ageing. Clean sand, clay and loamy soils have been contaminated with phenanthrene. Furthermore, sandy soil has been peat amended as a mean to detect the role of organic fraction as a contaminant absorber. Samples were exposed to weather for up to 6 months in controlled conditions. At regular time intervals, chemical and ecotoxicological assays have been carried out in order to determine the effect of natural ageing and biodegradation phenomena (decrease in total contaminant amount and leachable fraction in solvents with different polarity). Parallel to chemical analysis and toxicological tests, a biological assessment has also been acco
