Abstract
Chemical characterization of aerosol particles in Hong Kong K.K.W. Ma & K.N. Yu Department of Physics and Materials Science, City University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong. Abstract A total of 11 1 individual aerosol particles with a size between 1 and 10 pm were collected fiom a covered bus terminus. Particles were collected on a double-sided adhesive carbon tape by using a portable air-sampling pump. The analyses of the chemical compositions were examined by scanning electron microscope, in conjunction with an energy dispersive X-ray microanalyzer for Na, Mg, Al, Si, P, S, C1, K, Ca, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, Br, Cd, Ba and Pb. From the measured elemental concentrations, factor analysis was used to identify the sources of these particles, and eight factors were extracted. The resolved sources were marine aerosols (Mg, Na), crustal materials (Al, Si, K), lubricating oil (Ba, Cd, Mn), metal partsJbrake and tyre (Cu, Zn, -Ca), road dust (Cr, Ti), gasoline vehicular emission (Br), and diesel he1 e
