Abstract

P. ~obo-~erreira~ I Department of Civil Engineering, Polytechnic Institute of Coimbra, Portugal 2 Department of Civil Engineering, Coimbra University, Portugal 3 National Civil Engineering Laboratory (LNEC), Avenida do Brasil, Lisboa, Portugal Abstract Aquifer systems can play an important role in meeting ever-increasing water demands. The costs of installing all the equipment for, and then running, a water supply system are of critical importance, and so this paper sets out to define a model that will help design a supply-structure system to both satisfy demand and minimize total costs. This model will be solved using a simulated annealing algorithm. This random search heuristic method enables, at least in theory and in probability, a global optimum to be found for a function, whether constrained or not.
