Abstract
The decline of expert systems was mainly due to the bottle-neck of tedious time and man-power consuming manual knowledge acquisition from domain experts Advanced methods of artificial intelligence, such as machine learning or machine discovery of structure and processes of dynamic systems, can to a%eat deal automate the knowledge acquisition process. In the paper, two of these methods, i.e. induction of regression trees, and machine discovery of algebraic and differential equations, are briefly presented and described. Examples of their use in the domain of environmental systems and processes are given Thev mclude the induction of regression trees for algal growth in the Lagoon of Venice and for algal blooms in the Lake of Bled. In addition we demonstrate
