Abstract
This contribution gives an insight into the results of the research project \“Decentralised measures of flood protection at the river Lausitzer Neisse” carried out for the German Federal Foundation for Environmental Protection. It focusses on the description of modes of action and the effectiveness of decentralised measures to a preventive flood protection, Besides technical flood protection and the protection and enlargement of floodplains, decentralised measures in the entire catchment area of a river are introduced as an important component of flood protection. The project concentrates on urban water management and on the improvement of the storage capacity of agricultural land. The water retention potential of these two approaches is examined and simulated. Finally, a method to develop a flood-protection concept with decentralised measures in the river basin is worked out.
