Abstract A GIS based modelling system has been designed as a tool for policy support. It allows a detailed assessment of the impact of emission reduction strategies on critical load exceedances for acidification and eutrophication in forests, heath and grassland ecosystems. Based on the results for 652 forest ecosystems in Flanders, the current emission reduction scenarios show a trend that confronts policy makers in 2010 with persistent exceedances for both acidifying and nutrient nitrogen. 1 Introduction Critical loads play an important role in defining policies to achieve a cost- effective reduction of acidification, eutrophication and ozone formation in Europe.
