Abstract Aiming at the implementation of sustainable land use, the involvement of stakeholders into research design, the implementation process and evaluation of innovative technologies, is of vital importance. In order to ensure user-oriented efficient and effective results, the role of qualitative approaches is to identify user options and impediments of implementation and to enable users to give feedback. The role of quantitative approaches, such as computational modelling, is to identify which prototypes of modified technologies are suitable to avoid environmental risks and, at the same time, to minimise economic losses. The modelling results are important as a base for user-group-discussions and e
