Abstract

Use of Spreadsheets for Water and Bed Profile Calculations Dr. Aly N. El-Bahrawy Associate Professor, Civil Engineering Department College of Engineering, University of Qatar EMAIL: bahrawy@qu.edu.qa Abstract The paper demonstrates the use of spreadsheets to carry out water and bed profile calculations. For water profiles, different calculation methods are explained using both the energy and momentum equations. For the standard step method, different solutions to the unknown depth are compared and an efficient solution using spreadsheet facilities is suggested. For bed profiles, an uncoupled model is demonstrated which uses the previous water profile model in addition to sediment volume calculations. Two spreadsheets are used to illustrate the details of calculations for two simple examples. The first illustrates the calculation of an M2 curve in a trapezoidal channel, and the second calculates the bed profile for an Ml curve in a wide rectangular channel. The paper discusses
