Abstract
This two-part paper addresses the specific hazards that most materials are faced with in coastal areas, particularly in their atmosphere. Pretty common features like high relative humidity and airborne salts, which are inherent in such an environment, may turn into a nightmare for conservationists, architects and materials scientists, that is for everyone involved with old (historic) or new infrastructure. Two cases are presented and discussed herein. Neither of them was designed or singled out especially for the occasion: both were taken from extended programs of metal-corrosion and stone-decay monitoring in the ope
