Abstract
Scaling up nonlinear or heterogeneous material property flow and transport processes is a very active area of current research. Various ap- proaches have been proposed to tackle the problem, ranging from stochas- tic procedures to the use of filtering techniques. Previous work by the first two authors has been concentrated on deriving and applying closures based on asymptotic expansions constructed through approximations of Gaussian filters in Fourier space. Numerical tests of the described pro- cedure have yielded very encouraging results for the large scale fields as- sociated with Burgers' equation and Darcian groundwater flow. Those closures are approximate by construction. This paper describes a family of so-called Butterworth filters, which a
