Abstract
For the modelling of biologically mediated redox processes in the subsurface a simulation model is presented. The transport part of the model solves the transient convection dispersion differential equations. The pure chemical submodel incorporates all reactions for which chemical equilibrium can be assumed. The kinetic submodel describes the heterotrophic metabolisms of several groups of microorganisms. For the modelling of complete redox sequences (aerobic carbonaceous oxidation, denitrification, fermentation, Mn (IV)-, Fe(III)-reduction, and sulfate reduction) five functional bacteria groups are defined. Growth and metabolism of the five bacteria groups are formulated in terms of Monod equations.
