Abstract
A finite element model is presented and used to examine the potential in- fluence of evaporation/condensation on moisture content and temperature distributions during unsaturated zone remediation. The presented model is a one-dimensional multiphase flow simulator which describes mass and energy transport in porous media. The coupled equations are solved using a sequential iterative solver with matric potential and temperature as pri- mary variables. A literature-derived relation is used to quantify the in- fluence of water potential change and temperature change upon biological growth rates.
