Abstract
Various factors, internal and external, affect the environmental performance of firms. In order to improve public environmental policies and business environmental management, it is of prime importance to know better, i.e., to quantify these influences. The purpose of this paper is to show how one can study the influence of specific, quantifiable factors on the environmental performance as measured by indicators elaborated in the scope of the productive efficiency theory. The methodology is illustrated by the analysis of a small data set of U.S. fossil fuel- fired electric utilities. T
