Abstract
A combined top-down bottom approach is applied to investigate the relationship between Mediterranean land abandonment, ecosystem's evolution and changes in soil erosion processes at different scales. Quantitative and qualitative changes in sources of sediment and water are found to occur due to changes in land cover after abandonment. Key-indicators that can be used to monitor the implementation of sustainable management strategies at different scales are considered and substantiated. 1 Introduction Within many Mediterranean countries, marginal areas have been set aside and used for extensive grazing during the last decades, amongst others due to EC policies. The set aside practice commonly implies a change in land use f
