Abstract
Heavy metal pollution in seawater and marine sediments off the coast of Gijon (Cantabrian Sea) R. Garcia, E. Maranon, H. Sastre E.T.S. Ingenieros Industrials, University of Oviedo, 33204 Gijon, Spain ABSTRACT The aim of the present work is the evaluation of heavy metal pollution off the Asturian coast, in Northern Spain. The metals determined (Cr, Ni, Zn and Cd) were analysed by the technique of Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry. Prior to their determination, a preconcen(ration of the metals was carried out onto adsorbent beds: Lewatit TP-207, a quelatant resin with iminodiacetate groups; Amberlite IR-120, a strong acid resin with sulfonic groups; and phosphated apple residues (P-AR), a lignocellulosic waste with weak acid groups (carboxylic, phenolic, phosphoric). Samples of seawater and marine sediments were taken at different points off the Asturian coast in June and July, 1992. Superficial sediment samples were also taken whose metal content is presently being analysed by prio
