Abstract
Influence of operation variables on secondary clarification in full scale contact stabilization activated sludge plants N. Dermissi Department of Civil Engineering, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, 540 06 Thessaloniki, Greece ABSTRACT The cost and efficiency of the activated sludge systems are strongly influenced by the performance of the final clarifiers. Existing information concerning the performance of full scale clarifiers is rather inadequate. Analysing full scale contact stabilization activated sludge plants data, secondary sedimentation detention time, sludge recycle rate, wastewater temperature, surface overflow rate, and sludge volume index were all found to affect the clarification efficiencies of the final settlers and the clarity of the effluents. The conclusions reached contribute to the better design and operation of the contact stabilization activated sludge plants. INTRODUCTION In the activated sludge systems, the biological origin of m
