Abstract
A model for the dispersion of suspended matter in surface water bodies G.C. Christodoulou Department of Civil Engineering, National Technical University of Athens, Athens 15773, Greece ABSTRACT A quasi 3-D model for the dispersion of particulate matter is presented. It is based on a separation of variables technique, whereby the vertical distribu- tion of sediment is solved separately for conditions of local equilibrium, fol- lowing the well-established Rouse profile. The horizontal distribution of depth averaged concentration is subsequently obtained taking into account a decay term depending on the near-bed concentration and the absorption/reflection index of the bottom boundary. A finite element model with linear triangles is employed for the numerical computation of the suspended matter concentration and also the deposition pattern for a domain of arbitrary geometry with a known flow field. The model is presently limited to describing the far field distribution of fi
