Abstract

Use of the DYNA 3-D FE code to quantify the response of steel plate girders subjected to localized combined blast and fragment loads S.J. Wright* & B. Hobbs& ** Denver Research Institute, University of Denver, Denver, Colorado <90fO<9, (76L4 ^Department of Civil and Structural Engineering, University of Sheffield, Mappin Street, Sheffield ABSTRACT In order to generate specific vulnerability data on steel I section girders, finite element (FE) modelling and analyses were conducted. Combined blast and fragment loads were semi-rigorously defined for a cased explosive charge and were applied to the model of a "typical" girder as two independent pressure loads with both spacial and time distributions. Loading analyses and FE analysis results were used to develop binary damage boundaries for complete destruction of the girder by five different weapons at various locations. Predicted damage morphology and the extent of the damage boundary compared well with published
