Thornse^ "DEMEX Consulting Engineers, 2400 Copenhagen NV, DK Helmuth Toftegaard, Denmark ^Materials Department, RIS0 National Laboratory, 4000 Roskilde, Denmark ABSTRACT The explicit finite element technique is applied to ballistic impact on thermoplastic fibre composite armours. Based on numerical studies, guidelines are given for the geometrical modelling of the armour. Two approaches to modelling of failure induced by ballistic impact in thermoplastic fiber compos- ites are presented. The failure models have been implemented in the LS-Dyna- 3D code as user subroutines. Preliminary numerical and experimental results are shown and compared with the Chang-Chang-model.
