Box 39040, Ramat Aviv, ABSTRACT High-speed penetration is considered as well as a collision under a moderate speed. The rigid rod penetration into a deformable plate is represented as a two-stage process. The first one is a rigid body movement in a half-space when the rear surface has no influence on the deformation and flow of the material. A simple hydro dynamic model is proposed for this stage, permit- ting an estimate of the resistance to movement and the size of the crater created by the moving body. It is shown that the resistance to movement reaches a minimum at a certain speed differing from zero, its value depends on the properties of the medium and the shape of the leading tip of the rod.
