Abstract
The paper proposes a topology optimisation methodology based on optimality criteria to solve structural and thermal problems. The results of its application to the optimal design of the brackets linking the Meteor & Debris Protection System panels to the main structure of the ISS module Columbus are shown. In many cases it is possible to replace the problem of integrating a differential equation set by the equivalent problem of seeking a function which gives a minimum value to a variational functional. General rules for deriving natural variational principles from linear differential equ
