Abstract
Results of an analytical study of using a pendulum tuned mass damper (PTMD) to control the excessive vibrations of building floors are presented. An equivalent single degree of freedom (SDOF) model for the PTMD is developed to derive the equations of motion of the coupled PTMD-floor system. Closed form solutions for the floor and PTMD dynamic responses in terms of nondimensional parameters are developed. The optimal design parameters of the PTMD are found using an optimization algorithm.
