R. ~ r r o ~ o ' & J. ~ a r t e ~ 1 General Engineering Department, University of Puerto Rico, Mayagiiez Campus, Puerto Rico 'civil Engineering Department, University of Puerto Rico, Mayagiiez, Puerto Rico Abstract In some structural systems, the amount of damping increases due to the addition of a mechanism that helps in the energy dissipation during a seismic motion. The inclusion of linear viscous dampers is one of these mechanisms. The addition of the viscous dampers produces a non-proportional damped system. However, if the off-diagonal terms of the structure damping matrix are neglected, the solution can be approximated as if the system were a classical one. This paper presents the formulation and procedure to obtain the maximum response of a structure with added viscous dampers using a modified response spectrum.
