Abstract The scope of this paper is to show the results obtained for simulating three-dimensional breaking waves. The Navier-Stokes equations are directly solved in air and water, the interface tracking being achieved by a Lax-Wendroff TVD scheme (Total Variation Diminishing), which is able to handle interface reconnections. A three-dimensional study of breaking waves is presented, using initial conditions corresponding to unstable periodic sinusoidal waves of large amplitudes. The method is firstly validated on different cases. We then proceed to the study of three-dimensional plunging breaking waves. We could see that our simulations did not develop any fully three-dimensional flow structures, giving the same results that past two-dimensional simulati
