Abstract We present the results of an ongoing research about the use of parallel computing for the numerical modelling of nearshore hydrodynamics. An overview is given on strategies for building a parallel, small supercomputer and performing parallel computing. We mainly focus our analysis on the parallelization of the code used to numerically solve the Nonlinear Shallow Water Equation (NSWE) and on the evalution of the performance gained by using a parallel code. 1 Introduction In the last twenty years numerical simulation has become one of the essential tools for modelling nearshore hydrodynamics and numerical codes have become more and more complex. This is reflected in a growing computation heaviness in terms of CPC time. For standard applications the ratio between "computing time" and "physical ti
