Abstract

When determining by means of simulation the energy consumption of a freight train, which is driven manually by a driver, it is important to take the driver behaviour into consideration. Driver behaviour is studied for various freight trains in Sweden and a couple of driving describing parameters are proposed. An empirical model of driver behaviour is developed from full scale testing and observations. The model has resulted in a significant improvement in determining energy consumption. Simulations are compared with measurements and the impact of driver behaviour on energy consumption and running time is studied. In the paper a review of the research will be made with conclusions.
