Abstract
An important effort on modernizing the railway system is undertaken nowadays in Greece. The whole project will focus mainly in electrifying the railway system of the country. Hence, it would be advisable to study previous experiences of railway system electrification. Towards this direction a special problem encountered in the SOCIETE NATIONALE DE CHEMIN DE FER, the national railway company of France, will be presented in this paper (adequately simplified). It concerns power supply. The most diffused technology for the power supply is the mono -phase transmission technology (25 KV and 50 Hz) and may be used either a transmission line surrounded by the air or may be used a third insulated rail. The circuit closes using the two other rails or just one of them.
