Abstract

In this paper some selected aspects of both reliability and safety with respect to underwater vehicles, particularly underwater remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) are dealt with. A Man-Technology-Environment system is presented. A reliability-related structure and the system of such a vehicle is discussed and the issue of selecting a reliability level is deliberated. 1 Introduction Along with a growing number of applications of underwater vehicles in both exploration and exploiting of the world's ocean, the problem of both reliability and safety of underwater systems acquires a special significance. Due to the possibility of the loss of human life and of substantial economic losses in the case of unfavourable occurrences, these issues are already given extra attention at the designing stage.
