Abstract
Model experiments have been carried out to investigate the impact of molten core material against the head of a reactor pressure vessel. Results without and with the mitigation influence of different internal structures suffering strong plastic deformation and fracture are presented. Scaling rules to convert the results to full scale dimensions are introduced and validated. It is believed that this way of solution may be applicable also to other liquid structure impact problems. 1 Introduction In some accident scenarios severe loading and damage are produced by liquid structure impact processes. Examples are: birds hitting air plane structures (the birds can be treated as a liquid); water impact against ship walls and off-shore st
