Abstract
This study is devoted to predicting damage of detached shell structures of the process industry under blast load caused by an explosion outside the object. A typical example illustrating this problem are large vertical storage tanks. As they are detached and extremely thin-walled, and cannot be effectively protected in a usual way, it is useful to know their survivability in the above mentioned case. This study deals mainly with the generalisation of the problem in a pressure- impulse diagram. So it is possible, based on the known dimensional characteristics of the structure and known, possibly assumed intensity of the explosion, to estimate a degree of damage of the structure and, consequently, to quantify its survivability.
