Abstract
The paper describes a new 3D method, developed taking into account the relative contraction of melt weld metal between two states at the end of heating and cooling phases, for evaluating the welding effects on structural assemblies of thin stiffened panels in decks and bulkheads in shipbuilding. A thermo-mechanical model so being built up can be treated by the conventional finite-element method. Two successive stages of the study are then presented with experimental results of 2D and 3D applications on several thin panels. Finally, the paper presents two industrial application cases of the method and, as a conclusion, the multipurpose usefulness of this method to control and prevent any excessive distort
