Abstract
The structural rehabilitation of historical buildings has often to face the problem of the evaluation of the actual bearing capacity of the vaults. This problem is usually carried out referring to an ideal system of many arches, one beside the other. With this ideal scheme, in some cases, equilibrium can not be justified, especially when the loads are not uniformly distributed. For the arch stability, as it is well known, the resultant force has to be internal to the central kern to assure stability and to avoid cracks. The arch scheme is sometimes too simplified and it does not consider some important
