Abstract
In the back analysis of a 2-dimensional FEM elastic problem, the fuzzy inference technique is applied to estimate the unknown physical constants such as the Poissons' ratio or the elastic modulus. If the FEM problem deals with the model- like ground layers, the unknown constants are likely to spread along the layer boundaries. In this case, the fuzzy inference technique is used to find the boundaries roughly, and the genetic algorithm (GA) is used together in the analysis to identify the elements with unknown constants along the boundary, precisely. It is simple and advantageous to use the fuzzy inference
