Abstract

Distress in retaining wall of a royal palace on a hill M. Key ad Department of Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering, Building Research Center, Cairo, Egypt ABSTRACT This paper presents a study of a case of distress happened in a high masonry retaining wall on the sea- shore. The wall retains high man-made backfill of sandy soil to form an artificial hill of 14 m height. On the top of the hill a splendid royal palace was constructed in 1940. Due to the lack of maintenance and the climate condition, severe cracks and lateral movement had taken place in many parts in the wall body. The paper comprises all investigations and studies which had been carried out to identify the problem in order to prevent any more deterioration and adopt the most convenient remedy.
