Viskovic" ^ Department of Structural and Geotechnical Engineering, University of Rome ('La Sapienza'), Italy ** Studio Progettazione e Controlli, Rome, Italy ABSTRACT This paper deals with the problem of seismic strengthening and of the restoration of the structures of the St. Francis, St. Claire, and St. Mary of the Angels Basilicas. To accomplish this objective it was necessary to carry out an historical survey, accurate direct observation (intergrated with investigation) and some mathematical models which can be divided into two groups: in the first phase global models of the Basilicas were made and analysed, within elastic field, under seismic actions (applied as static equivalent),to verify the position of the critical zones; in the second phase, to test the interventions designed,
