Abstract

The advent of private transport has resulted in congestion of our city centres and out of town development, often leaving the centres to decay into inhospitable environ- ments resulting from increased noise, air pollution and general economic decline. By a combination of careful land use planning, traffic management and design of public transport as a viable alternative to the private car, city centres can be restored to their prime purpose as a venue for recreation, entertainment and commerce. This paper investigates the environmental and social objectives and constraints affecting the design of public transport systems, with particular regard to the requirement to make city centres accessible without degrading their environment.
